Overview

The Armenian viper is a robust mountain viper native to the highlands of the South Caucasus and eastern Anatolia. It is one of several closely related "mountain vipers" placed in the genus Montivipera, all restricted to rocky highland terrain in the Middle East and Caucasus.

It is venomous, with a bite considered medically significant, though it is uncommon and habitat-restricted, limiting interactions with humans.

How to identify it

  • Pale gray, tan, or yellowish-brown ground color with large, dark, rectangular or rounded dorsal blotches
  • Heavy-bodied build typical of mountain vipers
  • Broad, triangular head clearly set off from the neck
  • Vertically elliptical pupils
  • Adults commonly reach 60-100 cm

Its bold, high-contrast blotched pattern and high-elevation range help separate it from other regional vipers.

Habitat & range

Inhabits rocky slopes, scree, and semi-arid mountain steppe typically between about 1,500 and 2,500 meters elevation. Found across Armenia, adjacent parts of eastern Turkey, northwestern Iran, and small areas of southern Georgia and Azerbaijan.

Behavior, diet & reproduction

Active by day in cooler months and shifts toward crepuscular or nocturnal activity during hot summer periods. Feeds mainly on small mammals and birds, with juveniles taking lizards. It is oviparous in some regions, though some Montivipera species show variable reproductive strategies; clutch sizes are generally small.
