Key identifying features

The Blotched Snake takes its name from the series of large, irregularly shaped dark blotches that run down the length of its back, contrasting sharply against a paler background and making it one of the more visually striking patterned colubrids in its range.

Coloration & pattern

The background color is typically pale gray, tan, or light brown, overlaid with a row of large, dark brown to blackish blotches that may be rounded, rectangular, or irregular in shape. These blotches are usually well-separated from each other along the length of the body, creating a bold, high-contrast pattern. The belly often shows a checkered or mottled pattern of dark and light coloring.

Head, eyes & scales

The head is moderately distinct from the neck and often carries a dark marking or blotch of its own, continuing the body's patterned theme. Eyes are round-pupiled, consistent with non-venomous, largely diurnal to crepuscular habits. Scales may be smooth or weakly keeled depending on the species and region.

How to tell it apart from look-alikes

The large, well-separated, high-contrast blotches distinguish this species from more finely spotted or striped colubrids such as the Coin-Marked Snake or Ladder Snake. Its heavier, more robust build also sets it apart from slender racers and whip snakes, which tend to show either much finer patterning or largely uniform coloration. The bold blotch pattern combined with a sturdier body shape is the most reliable identification feature.
