Overview
Crocker's sea krait is exceptional among sea kraits for being confined entirely to Lake Tegano, a brackish lake on Rennell Island in the Solomon Islands, with no access to the open ocean. This isolation makes it one of the most geographically restricted sea snakes in the world.
Its unusual habitat has driven distinct ecological adaptations compared to marine sea kraits, including reliance on the lake's resident fish populations rather than reef or open-ocean prey.
How to identify it
- Banded pattern of dark bluish-black and pale bands, similar to other Laticauda
- Paddle-shaped tail retained despite landlocked habitat
- Relatively small, robust body compared to marine sea kraits
- Head not strongly distinct from neck
- Distinguished from all other sea kraits by its unique, single-lake distribution
Habitat & range
Found only in and around Lake Tegano, a large brackish lake on Rennell Island, Solomon Islands. It uses both aquatic habitat and nearby shoreline vegetation, but never enters true seawater since the lake has no ocean connection.
Behavior, diet & reproduction
Preys on eels and other fish within the lake, hunting both in open water and among submerged vegetation. Like other sea kraits, it comes ashore periodically, likely for resting and reproduction, laying eggs on land unlike most other sea snakes which are live-bearing.
Frequently asked questions
Is Crocker's sea krait dangerous?
It is venomous, but it is a shy species restricted to a remote lake, so encounters with people are uncommon.
Where does it live?
Exclusively in Lake Tegano on Rennell Island in the Solomon Islands, with no ocean access.
How is it different from other sea kraits?
It is the only sea krait species confined entirely to a landlocked body of water rather than the ocean.
Does it lay eggs or give live birth?
Like other sea kraits, it lays eggs on land rather than bearing live young at sea.
