Key identifying features

The Crowned Snake gets its name from a pale, cream to whitish crown or collar marking around the head and nape that contrasts sharply with the dark body color, forming its most distinctive field mark. It is otherwise a small, slender, secretive elapid typical of many small ground-dwelling Australian snakes.

Coloration & pattern

The body is generally dark grey-brown to blackish, fairly uniform along its length without strong blotching. The head, by contrast, carries a pale cream, whitish, or pinkish 'crown' that curves across the nape and along the margins of the head, clearly set off from the darker body color. The belly is often pale to pinkish, and in some species contrastingly darker.

Head, eyes & scales

The head is small and only slightly wider than the neck, with the crown marking most visible when viewed from above. Eyes are moderate in size with round pupils. Scales are smooth and glossy throughout.

Size & body shape

This is a small species, usually under 50 cm in total length, with a slim, cylindrical body suited to hiding under surface debris and moving through loose substrate.

Range & habitat where you'll see it

Found in dry forests, woodlands, and rocky habitats across parts of Australia, sheltering under rocks, logs, and leaf litter. It is nocturnal or crepuscular and secretive, rarely seen active in daylight.

How to tell it apart from look-alikes

The pale head crown against a darker, more uniform body is the clearest distinguishing feature separating this species from other small elapids like the Grey Snake or De Vis' Banded Snake, which lack such a strongly contrasted head marking. Checking the head and nape for this pale crown is the fastest way to confirm identification.
