Overview
The Indian Sand Boa is a heavy-bodied, fossorial member of the sand boa family found across the Indian subcontinent and parts of the Middle East. Its blunt, rounded tail closely resembles its head, giving rise to the popular myth of a 'two-headed snake.'
This species is a completely non-venomous constrictor. It has long been a subject of folklore and, unfortunately, illegal wildlife trade due to superstitions surrounding its unusual tail shape.
How to identify it
- Cylindrical, muscular body with almost no visible tapering toward the tail
- Blunt, rounded tail that closely mimics the shape of the head
- Uniform brown, tan, or grayish coloration, sometimes with faint darker mottling
- Small eyes with vertical pupils and a small, wedge-shaped head
- Adults commonly reach 60 cm to just over 1 m
Habitat & range
Inhabits sandy soils, scrublands, agricultural fields, and semi-desert terrain across India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Iran. It is almost entirely fossorial, spending the vast majority of its life burrowed beneath loose or sandy substrate.
Behavior, diet & reproduction
Nocturnal and rarely seen above ground, it ambushes rodents and other small mammals from below the surface, constricting prey before swallowing it. It is slow and non-aggressive, relying on burrowing and its unusual tail as its primary defenses. Reproduction is ovoviviparous, with females giving birth to live young.
