Overview

Lataste's Viper is a viper native to the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) and parts of northwestern Africa, including Morocco and Algeria. It is one of only a few native venomous snake species in the region.

It is venomous with a bite that can cause significant local symptoms, though it is generally not considered life-threatening to healthy adults in areas with medical access. It is of conservation interest due to habitat pressures in parts of its range.

Found in dry scrubland, rocky hillsides, and open woodland across the Iberian Peninsula and into Morocco and Algeria, typically at low to moderate elevations.
