The northwestern carpet python represents populations of the widespread Morelia spilota variegata group inhabiting the Kimberley region and nearby parts of northwestern Australia. Like other carpet pythons, it shows considerable regional variability in color and pattern.

It occupies a range of habitats from rocky gorges to woodland and is well adapted to the seasonal wet-dry tropical climate of the region.
