Overview
The Savu Python is a small, insular member of the water python group, endemic to Savu Island in the Lesser Sunda chain of Indonesia. Its restricted range and limited study make it one of the least-documented python species.
It was only distinguished from Macklot's Python relatively recently, based on differences in scalation and proportions.
How to identify it
- Brownish dorsal coloration, generally darker or more uniform than mainland relatives
- Smaller overall size compared to Water Python and Macklot's Python
- Smooth, glossy scales with mild iridescence
- Broad head with heat-sensing pits
- Vertical pupils
- Best distinguished from close relatives by scale counts and restricted island range
Habitat & range
Confined to the small island of Savu, occupying lowland scrub, agricultural edges, and areas near water sources.
Behavior, diet & reproduction
Presumed nocturnal, sheltering during the day. Likely preys on small mammals and birds similar to related species. Reproductive biology is poorly documented but presumed oviparous like other Liasis pythons.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Savu Python venomous?
No, it is non-venomous.
Why is so little known about this species?
Its extremely small range on one island has limited scientific study.
How does it differ from Macklot's Python?
It is generally smaller and differs in scale counts, and it is endemic to Savu Island only.
Is it considered rare?
Its restricted island range makes it of conservation interest, though population data are limited.
