How to Identify the African Rock Python (Identification Guide)

Key identifying features

The African Rock Python is the largest snake species in Africa, identified by its enormous size, thick muscular body, and a bold, contrasting pattern of large brown, olive, and cream blotches. Along with its size, the distinctive dark arrow-shaped marking on top of the head is one of the most useful identification features.

Coloration & pattern

The body shows a series of large, irregular blotches in shades of brown, olive, and chestnut, outlined in darker brown or black, set against a lighter tan or cream background. The blotches often run together somewhat along the back, forming a bold, high-contrast mottled pattern that is generally more vividly marked and larger-scaled than in many smaller python or boa species. The belly is pale cream or yellowish, typically with fewer markings than the back.

Head, eyes & scales

The head is broad, distinct from the neck, and marked with a prominent dark, arrow- or spearhead-shaped marking extending from the snout to the back of the head, bordered by lighter coloring along the sides of the face. Eyes have vertical pupils. Heat-sensing pits are visible along the scales of the upper and lower lips, an important identifying feature shared with other pythons. Scales are smooth and glossy.

Size & body shape

This is an exceptionally large snake, with adults commonly reaching 13 to 20 feet (4 to 6 m), and some exceptional individuals reported even longer, making it Africa's largest snake species by a considerable margin. The body is extremely thick and powerfully muscled, tapering to a stout tail.

Range & habitat where you'll see it

The African Rock Python is widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, occupying savanna, grassland, forest edge, and areas near rivers, swamps, and lakes. It relies on cover such as burrows, rock crevices, and dense vegetation for shelter and is often found near permanent water sources.

How to tell it apart from look-alikes

Its exceptional size alone separates the African Rock Python from nearly all other snakes across its range, few of which approach comparable dimensions. Compared to the Southern African Python, a closely related and similarly patterned species, the African Rock Python is generally larger on average and found across a broader range further north and west in sub-Saharan Africa, with the two sharing the same arrow-shaped head marking and heat-sensing lip pits as key python-group identification traits. Its blotched, high-contrast pattern also distinguishes it from large non-python constrictors on other continents, which typically show different pattern styles and lack the same head marking.
