- How accurate is AI snake identification from a photo?
- It is a strong first guess, not a verdict. Many harmless snakes mimic dangerous ones, juveniles look different from adults, and a photo cannot show scale counts or head details reliably. Never use the result to decide whether a snake is venomous or safe to approach or handle. Treat every wild snake as potentially dangerous and verify with a herpetologist or your local wildlife authority.
- What kind of photo works best?
- Take it from a safe distance and use zoom rather than getting closer. A sharp, well-lit shot showing the head, the pattern along the body, and the tail, with the snake filling most of the frame, gives the best result.
- Can it identify shed skins, juveniles, and dead snakes?
- Yes. Live snakes, hatchlings, shed skins, roadkill, skeletons, and clear drawings or paintings of snakes are all in scope, as are legless lizards such as slow worms and glass lizards. Ropes, hoses, worms, eels, and lizards with legs are flagged as not a snake.
