Chihuahuan Nightsnake

The Chihuahuan Nightsnake is a small, secretive nocturnal colubrid found across arid and semi-arid regions of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, particularly in and around the Chihuahuan Desert. It is part of a widespread species complex previously lumped with other nightsnakes before taxonomic revisions split it into distinct species.

This mildly venomous species uses rear fangs to subdue small prey such as lizards and is entirely harmless to humans, being far too small and inoffensive to pose any threat.

• Small, slender body with smooth scales
• Pale gray, tan, or light brown dorsal coloration with rows of darker brown blotches
• Distinctive pair of large dark blotches on the neck, resembling a partial collar
• Vertically elliptical pupils, unlike many harmless colubrids
• Distinguished from other nightsnakes primarily by range and subtle scale/pattern details

Found in rocky desert scrub, grasslands, and canyon habitats across the Chihuahuan Desert region of Texas, New Mexico, and adjacent Mexico, often near rock outcrops or under surface debris.

Strictly nocturnal, remaining hidden under rocks or debris during the day and emerging at night to hunt. Feeds primarily on small lizards, especially sleeping ones caught at night, as well as amphibians and their larvae. Lays eggs in early to midsummer.
