Dahl's Whip Snake

Dahl's whip snake is a small to medium-sized colubrid with a wide range extending from the Balkans through Anatolia, the Levant, and into parts of Central Asia. It is harmless to humans and typical of arid and semi-arid open country.

It belongs to the diverse Platyceps whip snake genus, characterized by slender, agile bodies adapted for rapid movement across open ground.

• Slender, elongated body with a long, tapering tail
• Dorsal color pale grayish-brown to reddish-brown with a fine dark line or narrow stripe running along each side of the body
• A dark stripe often runs through the eye
• Smooth scales
• Large eyes with round pupils
• Head narrow and barely distinct from neck

Inhabits dry steppe, rocky hillsides, scrubland, and semi-desert, typically avoiding dense vegetation. Range extends from the Balkan Peninsula through Turkey, the Levant, Iraq, and Iran into parts of Central Asia, generally at low to moderate elevations.

Diurnal and highly alert, relying on speed to evade predators. Can be defensive when cornered but is not dangerous to humans. Preys on lizards and large insects, actively hunted and subdued without constriction. Oviparous, laying small clutches of eggs in early to mid-summer.
