Espirito Santo Rainbow Boa

The Espirito Santo Rainbow Boa is a regional population/form of Brazilian rainbow boa native to the coastal state of Espirito Santo in eastern Brazil. Like other rainbow boas, its smooth scales produce a distinctive iridescent, rainbow-like sheen in sunlight.

This boa inhabits the remaining fragments of Atlantic Forest and adjacent habitats in the region, where it plays a role as a mid-sized predator of small vertebrates.

• Reddish-brown to orange base color with darker ring-like or oval blotches along the body
• Rounded head, not strongly distinct from the neck
• Stocky, muscular boa body typical of Epicrates species
• Distinguished from other rainbow boa forms by subtle regional differences in pattern and coloration

Found in Atlantic Forest remnants and transitional habitats of Espirito Santo state, eastern Brazil, including lowland and hill forest as well as forest edges near water.

Primarily nocturnal, hunting small mammals, birds, and lizards using heat-sensing pits and ambush tactics. It is a live-bearing constrictor giving birth to sizable litters. Generally calm in disposition when undisturbed.
