Key identifying features

The Irian Jaya Carpet Python, native to the Indonesian province of Papua (formerly Irian Jaya) on New Guinea, is a non-venomous constrictor within the carpet python complex prized for its unusually variable and often dramatic patterning. Individuals can range from heavily blotched to strikingly zigzag-striped, or even nearly patternless, making pattern variability itself a key identifying trait of the population.

Coloration & pattern

Base colors span cream, yellow, gold, grey, and olive, overlaid with dark brown to black markings that can form blotches, jagged zigzag stripes, or broken chains depending on the individual. Some specimens display high-contrast, almost graphic patterning while others appear more subdued or diffuse. The belly is typically pale cream to white. This extreme variability within a single population is unusual among carpet pythons and is a hallmark of the form.

Head, eyes & scales

The head is broad, triangular, and distinct from the neck, with small irregular scales and prominent heat-sensing pits along the lips. Eyes have vertical, cat-like pupils. Scales are smooth and glossy, and the overall sheen can accentuate the sharp pattern contrast seen in many individuals.
