Mandalay Spitting Cobra

The Mandalay spitting cobra is endemic to the dry central zone of Myanmar around Mandalay, an arid region distinct from the wetter forests found elsewhere in the country. It was described as a separate species in 2000 after being distinguished from other regional cobras.

As a spitting cobra, it is venomous and capable of ejecting venom defensively, and while data on human encounters are limited, it is presumed to be medically significant given its relation to other well-documented Naja species.

• Adults reach roughly 0.9-1.3 m in length.
• Coloration typically brown to grayish, sometimes with a paler underside.

Restricted to the arid central dry zone of Myanmar surrounding Mandalay, an area of open scrub, dry deciduous forest, and agricultural land distinct from Myanmar's more humid regions.

Believed to be nocturnal, sheltering by day in burrows or under rocks. Like other spitting cobras, it can eject venom toward the eyes of a threat when disturbed. Diet likely includes small mammals and amphibians. It is presumed oviparous, though detailed data on reproduction are scarce.
