Overview

Boelen's python is a large, glossy black python found only in the mountainous interior of New Guinea, typically at higher elevations than most other python species. Its dark iridescent scales and pale banding make it one of the most visually distinctive pythons in the world.

Due to its remote montane habitat, it is infrequently encountered and much of its natural history remains incompletely studied.

How to identify it

  • Glossy black to dark brown body with an iridescent purple-blue sheen
  • Pale cream to yellow bands or blotches, more pronounced in juveniles
  • Large, elongated head distinct from neck
  • Heat-sensing labial pits present
  • Round pupils
  • Distinguished from other New Guinea pythons by high-elevation habitat and dark iridescent coloration

Habitat & range

Restricted to the central highland ranges of New Guinea, typically at elevations from around 1,000 to 2,600 m. Inhabits montane forest and cooler highland vegetation zones.

Behavior, diet & reproduction

Primarily nocturnal, hunting mammals and birds. Adapted to cooler montane temperatures compared to most lowland pythons. Oviparous, with limited documented data on clutch size and incubation in the wild.
