Overview
The Common Egg-Eating Snake is a slender, lightly built colubrid found throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa. It is renowned among naturalists for its highly specialized diet, which consists almost exclusively of bird eggs.
This species has no functional venom apparatus and is completely harmless to humans, lacking even the teeth needed to deliver a bite. Its remarkable jaw and esophagus adaptations allow it to swallow eggs many times the diameter of its own head.
How to identify it
- Slender body with rough, keeled dorsal scales
- Grayish-brown to tan background color with a series of dark, angular blotches down the back
- Relatively small head barely wider than the neck, with large eyes and round pupils
- Vestigial, greatly reduced teeth since it does not need to bite prey
- Adults typically 60-100 cm in length
Habitat & range
Widely distributed across savanna, woodland, grassland, and rocky terrain throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa. It is adaptable and can also be found in agricultural areas where nesting birds are common.
Behavior, diet & reproduction
Primarily nocturnal, it forages for bird nests and swallows eggs whole, using bony projections in the throat to crack the shell internally before regurgitating the crushed shell fragments. When threatened, it displays elaborate defensive behavior, including coiling, hissing, and rubbing its scales together to produce a rasping sound, despite being harmless. It is oviparous, laying clutches of roughly 6-25 eggs.
