Overview

The Persian Krait represents the western extreme of the krait genus's distribution, occurring in the arid and semi-arid landscapes of southern Iran and southwestern Pakistan. It is less studied than many of its more widespread relatives due to its remote range.

Despite the harsh, dry environment it inhabits, it retains the nocturnal habits and potent neurotoxic venom characteristic of the genus.

How to identify it

  • Smooth scales with an enlarged vertebral scale row running down the spine
  • Slender, cylindrical body with a triangular cross-section
  • Head barely distinct from the neck, with round pupils
  • Distinguished from other kraits primarily by its restricted arid western range

Habitat & range

Inhabits arid and semi-arid scrubland, rocky terrain, and areas near oases or seasonal water sources in the Balochistan region spanning southern Iran and southwestern Pakistan.
