Overview

The steppe ratsnake is a hardy, non-venomous colubrid with one of the widest and most northerly distributions of any ratsnake, occurring across Central Asia, Siberia, Mongolia, China, and Korea. It is a harmless constrictor well adapted to cool, continental climates.

Its broad range and tolerance of cold conditions make it one of the most northerly-occurring snake species in Asia.

How to identify it

  • Moderate-sized, slender to moderately robust body
  • Grayish-brown to olive dorsal coloration with rows of darker brown blotches or spots along the back
  • A dark stripe often runs from the eye toward the corner of the mouth
  • Belly pale with dark markings
  • Weakly keeled scales

Habitat & range

Found in steppe, grassland, rocky outcrops, agricultural areas, and forest edges. Range spans Kazakhstan and Central Asia through southern Siberia, Mongolia, northern China, and the Korean Peninsula, reaching higher latitudes than most other ratsnakes.

Behavior, diet & reproduction

Diurnal, active during the warmer months and hibernating through cold winters. Feeds on rodents, small birds, and their eggs, subdued by constriction. Generally docile, though it may hiss or vibrate its tail if disturbed. Oviparous, laying clutches of roughly 5-15 eggs.
